United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Gerard M. Karam, has announced his resignation effective January 10, 2025. The district includes 33 counties in northeastern and central Pennsylvania, with offices located in Scranton, Harrisburg, and Williamsport. Karam was nominated by Senators Robert Casey and Patrick Toomey, appointed by President Joseph R. Biden, confirmed by the Senate on June 13, 2022, and sworn into office on June 21, 2022.
Karam expressed gratitude for his appointment: “As a son of a police officer, being appointed United States Attorney in my home district has been an honor of a lifetime. I am grateful to President Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Senator Robert Casey, and former Senator Patrick Toomey for the opportunity to serve as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.”
He also acknowledged the contributions of his colleagues: “I am equally thankful for the career attorneys, professional staff and the dedicated law enforcement officers who work honestly, diligently and with the utmost good faith to keep our citizens safe… It has been a true privilege to serve alongside these impressive and committed individuals.”
During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, Karam served on several subcommittees under the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. His office achieved significant outcomes in public safety through Project Safe Neighborhoods by indicting and convicting numerous defendants involved in serious crimes such as drug trafficking and murder.
In healthcare fraud prevention efforts, Karam’s office held entities accountable for fraudulent activities resulting in substantial financial recoveries. Notable cases included resolving civil liabilities with a multi-hospital health system for $11.7 million due to Medicare rule violations.
Karam’s focus on combating fraud led to prosecutions involving major art thefts and money laundering schemes among others. Civil rights protection was another priority area where his office worked closely with the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
Administratively, Karam oversaw collections totaling nearly $20 million from civil actions and over $12 million from criminal matters during his term. He also initiated new units within the district aimed at improving legal processes.
Following Karam’s departure, First Assistant United States Attorney John Gurganus will become Acting United States Attorney under the Vacancies Reform Act.
