Balanced Scoring & Stifling Defense Help No. 10 Women's Hoops Cruise Past Wilkes, 70-32

Senior Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) earned MVP honors and The No. 10 University of Scranton women's basketball team (5-0) held Wilkes to just 24.1% shooting from the floor in a 70-32 victory over the Colonels (1-3) on the final day of the Cross County Challenge on Sunday afternoon at the Marts Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Angelini averaged 12.0 points while shooting 11-of-13 (83.3%) from the floor and added 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game over the two-day tournament en route to being named MVP.

Fellow senior Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) was also named to the All-Tournament team after helping lead the Lady Royals to the victory over Wilkes and an 80-42 win over King's on Saturday. Monaghan averaged 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the two victories.

On Sunday, Angelini and Monaghan combined to score nine of the first 11 points for the Lady Royals who opened up a 13-5 lead after one. Wilkes cut the lead to 18-8 at the 7:42 mark of the second quarter before junior Maddy Ryan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) sank a pair of free throws to ignite a 13-6 run over the remainder of the stanza and Angelini capped things off with a jumper as Scranton took a 31-14 lead into the locker room.

After outscoring King's by a 24-8 margin in the third quarter on Saturday, the dominance continued for the Lady Royals as they outscored Wilkes 26-9 in the period this afternoon. Holding a 43-21 lead with 4:14 left, graduate student Sam Rajza (Plains, Pa./Holy Redeemer) buried consecutive threes which began a 14-2 run through the rest of the quarter to extend the lead to 34 at 57-23. Wilkes could not get within 30 through the entirety of the fourth quarter and the Lady Royals led by as many as 43 following a layup by junior Leah Nolan (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) that made it 70-27 with 3:16 remaining.

Angelini had 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting to lead four Lady Royals' in double figures as junior Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting day (3-of-3 3PT), Monaghan buried three triples of her own en route to 11 points and Ryan contributed 10.

Scranton shot 43.8% (28-of-64) from the floor and 30.8% (8-of-26) from three-point range, while limiting Wilkes to the afore-mentioned 24.1% (13-of-54) clip from the field and 30.0% (3-of-10) from beyond the arc.

Madison Robel paced the Colonels with six points in the losing effort.

The Lady Royals held a decisive 49-33 edge on the glass behind seven rebounds from Ryan and six apiece from Hartnett and Monaghan. Hartnett also added four assists, two blocks and a steal in the contest.

Head coach Ben O'Brien's team will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 versus No. 20 Ithaca at the John Long Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
