University of Scranton Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 19.
Senior Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) of The University of Scranton women's basketball team helped lead the Lady Royals to a 3-0 week and has been named Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 16. 2021.
This marks the first time in her career that Shurina has garnered Scranton Athlete of the Week accolades. She is also the second women's basketball player to receive the honor this season following graduate student Abby Anderson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) for the week of Nov. 29 – Dec. 5.
Shurina averaged 11.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in victories over Clarks Summit, Susquehanna and Goucher a week ago. The East Meadow, N.Y., native tallied 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the 51-44 win at Susquehanna on Jan. 12 as her 14 boards surpassed her previous career-high of 10 that had been set in consecutive victories over Juniata on Feb. 26 & 27, 2021.
On the year, Shurina is averaging 10.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the 13-2 Lady Royals.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action tonight at Moravian for a Landmark Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
