University of Scranton Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 25.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team (3-1-2, 0-0-1 Landmark) and the Susquehanna River Hawks (2-3-1, 0-0-1 Landmark) battled to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of action on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams.
In the draw, the Royals notched their fifth straight shutout and have not allowed a goal in their last 538:41 of action dating back to the season opener on Sept. 4 versus Muhlenberg.
This marked the second straight meeting between the two teams that required extra time after Scranton captured a 1-0 victory in double overtime in 2019.
Perhaps the best chance of the first half for either team came in the 15th minute as junior Brendan King (Hempfield, Pa./Manheim) flicked a header towards the net following a corner kick, but a Susquehanna defender cleared King's header off the goal line to keep the game scoreless. In the final few minutes of the first half, the Royals had a couple of chances and River Hawks goalie Gerrit Stech tallied a pair of saves to send the teams scoreless into the halftime break.
In the second half, each team produced some high quality chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. Senior goalie Jake Hodlofski (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) notched a save in the early stages of the half on a shot from Brian McKee off a free kick in the 49th minute and Stech turned away a shot from freshman Sean Quin (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) in the 53rd minute. However, both teams mounted pressure in the final 10 minutes and Hodlofski made a crucial save in the 82nd minute as a free kick from Michael Morelli deflected off the crossbar and the keeper scrambled back into position to deny Kevin Ayoso on the ensuing header. A minute later on the other end, sophomore Nick Addamo's (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) attempt rolled just wide of the net past a diving Stech.
Scranton had a chance in the first overtime period as junior Christian Arcos (Bayonne, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) blasted a free kick towards the net and Stech deflected it away to keep things scoreless, while Hodlofski made one save in the two overtime periods.
The Royals held a slight 14-11 advantage in shots led by two attempts apiece from four different players.
Hodlofski tallied four saves on the day to notch his fifth shutout of the season, while Stech notched five saves for the River Hawks.
The Royals are back in action on Tuesday night at Wilkes with start time slated for 7 p.m.
