U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) announced that his legislation, H.R. 1286, known as the Simplifying Forms for Veterans Claims Act, has successfully passed out of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The bill aims to streamline the forms required by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for veterans and their survivors.
“I am incredibly pleased to see my bill pass out of committee and take the next step in the legislative process,” said Rep. Bresnahan. “Our military members dedicate their lives to serving our nation – the last thing they need when they come home are mountains of daunting paperwork.”
The current system requires veterans and survivors to complete standard forms through the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) within VA to initiate claims for benefits such as disability compensation, pension, and survivors’ benefits. These forms can be complex and difficult to navigate, potentially leading to delays or denials if not filled out correctly.
Rep. Bresnahan’s proposed legislation seeks to simplify this process by mandating that VA collaborate with a nonpartisan research entity to study and recommend revisions for making these forms more user-friendly. Following this study, findings would be reported to Congress with an expectation for implementation by the VA Secretary.
“Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District is home to nearly 40,000 veterans,” added Rep. Bresnahan. “I am proud to spearhead this legislation for each and every one of them and their families.”
